Scott Weiland, the former singer of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, has died at age 48.
He died in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, according to astatement released by his representatives on Facebook and Instagram.
He was scheduled to perform with his latest group, Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts, in Minnesota, but the show was cancelled.
Weiland was the frontman for the Grammy-award winning rock band Stone Temple Pilots that formed in 1986. The band rose to prominence in the ’90s for such hits as “Plush,” “Interstate Love Song,” “Creep,” and “Vasoline.”
In the 2000s, Weiland formed the supergroup Velvet Revolver with guitarist Dave Kushner, and former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum.
He also released four solo albums, including Blaster, with his new band Wildabouts.
He had a long battle with drug addiction that was publicized. He was arrestedmultiple times, spent several months in jail, and as many months in rehab. He discussed his struggles with heroin in his memoir Not Dead & Not For Sale.
“The opiate took me to where I’d always dreamed of going,” he wrote about the first time he tried the drug. “I can’t name the place, but I can say that I was undisturbed and unafraid, a free-floating man in a space without demons and doubts.”
